Brand Heritage
In 2009, two brothers set out to rethink the everyday bag — drawing from the quiet spirit of a town named Herschel.
Herschel Supply Co. was founded in Winnipeg, Canada, by Jamie and Lyndon Cormack. The name was borrowed from Herschel, Saskatchewan — a prairie settlement that once served as a railway junction. That lineage of movement, trade, and utility informs every design decision the company makes. The brand entered the market at a moment when backpacks had become disposable. Herschel chose a different path: familiar silhouettes, elevated materials, and a level of detail that rewards closer attention.
Core Strengths
The reputation Herschel has earned is built on a set of deliberate, visible choices — each one reinforcing the others.
A select 15-ounce canvas treated for water resistance. The fabric feels substantial from the first touch and loosens gracefully over years of service.
Zinc-alloy zippers, leather pulls, and bar-tack stitching at every tension point. These are small components chosen to last, not merely to look the part.
The patterned liner is more than a brand signature — the light interior makes it easy to locate items, even in low light. Form and function in one stripe.
Pockets are placed where hands naturally reach. Laptop sleeves are suspended and padded, keeping devices away from the base where stress occurs.
Contoured straps reduce shoulder strain; a structured back panel keeps the load stable during motion. The bag works with the body, not against it.
Muted palettes, restrained hardware, and a profile that reads well in both a boardroom and a trailhead. This is design that avoids the whims of passing trends.
The Case for Choosing Herschel
Many brands sell a bag. Herschel sells a relationship — with the object, with the daily rituals it supports, and with the idea that quality doesn't need to shout.
Choosing a Herschel bag means deciding that the items you carry deserve thoughtful shelter. It means appreciating that a bag is not an accessory but a vessel for your routine — laptop, notebook, water bottle, keys, the things that anchor your day.
The company's approach is incremental rather than revolutionary. Every season, patterns are refined, materials are reevaluated, pockets are repositioned. The result is an object that feels considered in ways that are difficult to articulate but immediately felt.
Who Carries Herschel
Lectures, library sessions, campus cafés. Herschel bags accommodate a laptop, a textbook, and the chaos of transition between classes — with enough polish to feel intentional.
Designers, architects, writers, photographers. Those whose tools are compact but precious. A Herschel bag carries a camera or a drawing pad with quiet confidence.
Subway, bus, bike, or on foot. The streamlined profile moves easily through crowded spaces. The compartments are arranged so that a transit card is always within reach.
Saturday farmers' markets, impromptu road trips, a hike that wasn't planned. Herschel's balance of structure and softness suits destinations that aren't fully mapped.
Market Presence
Products ship to every inhabited continent, with distribution partners on six continents.
From independent boutiques to national department stores, the brand maintains a wide retail footprint.
Consistently favourable ratings on major e-commerce platforms across the backpack catalog.
Owners frequently return for additional styles — a signal of durable satisfaction.
Sales data drawn from Amazon ratings, department-store sell-through reports, and publicly gathered review volumes. Figures are indicative of overall market reception rather than the result of a formal audit.
Where It Fits
Slips under a desk, holds a change of shoes, and carries a laptop securely through rush-hour trains and evening rain.
Designed for the back-and-forth of campus. Enough space for a laptop, a notebook, and a day's worth of small necessities.
A carry-on companion for a short trip. Fits overhead, holds everything needed, and looks right wherever it lands.
Light enough for a day trail, durable enough for unexpected weather. Hydration, snacks, and a camera — all within reach.
In the United States
The United States has a long romance with utilitarian design — workwear, leather boots, and bags that age with their owners. Herschel fits naturally into this tradition, offering a heritage aesthetic at a price point that doesn't gate-keep.
